Pause and reflect on the preciousness of life with three inspirational musical pieces. Manfred Honeck unveils a world premiere and PSO commission by Composer of the Year Steven Stucky, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the publication of Pittsburgh environmentalist Rachel Carson's Silent Spring. Gramophone describes violinist Nikolaj Znaider as "one of the greatest artists of his generation." He returns to perform Sibelius' transcendent Violin Concerto, with its heart-wrenching slow movement and hair-raising finale. Tchaikovsky's "Pathétique" Symphony traverses the full range of human emotion–recalling triumphant successes, heartbreaking personal tragedies, terrifying fears, and tender nostalgia.
